A New Adventure in Tracking: Our Journey Begins!
Hello, fellow dog enthusiasts! My name is Lorie, and I call the beautiful province of New Brunswick, Canada, my home. Sharing this space with me are my two amazing companions: Rumor, my lively 21-month-old Australian Shepherd, and Keisha, my wise and graceful 15-year-old Border Collie. Oh, and I should probably mention my husband too—he’s around here somewhere, usually being a good sport about our dog-centered household!
Though I’m a novice in the world of tracking, I do have some dog training experience under my belt. My dogs and I have dabbled in various sports, and we’ve loved every minute of it! From the moment Rumor joined my family at just 11 weeks old, we’ve been inseparable, exploring new training adventures together.
Last winter, we journeyed into the sport of Scent Detection, and it was an absolute blast! Rumor’s enthusiasm and natural talent were evident from the start. Her cute little nose worked wonders, and we soon found ourselves participating in our first couple of trials this summer. Watching her thrive in something she genuinely loves has been incredibly rewarding.
I’ve always wanted to try tracking with my dogs, and it finally felt like the right time to give it a go. With Rumor by my side, I knew we had the perfect team to dive into this exciting new sport. The only challenge? Finding a class or seminar nearby proved trickier than I anticipated. Determined not to let this deter us, I scoured online resources, ready to dive into virtual learning.
That’s when a friend mentioned Sil Sanders and his book, Modern Enthusiastic Tracking. She’d had success with her own dog using Sil’s methods and highly recommended the book. A quick peek at a few pages on Amazon convinced me that this was the guide I needed. With detailed instructions and a user-friendly approach, it seemed perfect for our self-paced adventure. Into the cart it went!
Armed with Sil’s book, I quickly read through Phase I, soaking up all the information. The moment I finished, I knew it was time to put theory into practice. Our tracking journey was officially underway!
